I just finished that book. It was a thrill to read, even if I had to re-read a few lines sometimes because of how fast the timeline is.
The youtube channel Extra History says there’s sexual undertones much like Dracula, but I sense none of this compared to Dracula.
I don’t understand how Heathcliff get the Grange. Didn’t Edgar safeguard his will so that it won’t fall into the hands of Heathcliff? Or is it because Cathy’s a girl, so her property belongs to Linton who died? Or is it because Cathy’s a minor, and so the property goes to the dead Isabella, hence it falls into Heathcliff’s hands?
I also had zero idea Catherine Earnshaw was pregnant until she actually died. I pictured a tragic romance meeting between Heathcliff and Catherine in the room, but I didn’t think she would actually be pregnant during it. Same with Isabella, I sense no mention of it until Linton was actually born AFTER she ran away.
And I don’t believe that Heathcliff actually loved Linton, even for a moment. It felt as if he hated the son he never got to raise. Hareton felt more of a son than Linton was. Towards the end, regardless, Hareton loved Heathcliff even in death. From what I understood, Joseph was the one who “raised” Hareton to be the uneducated fool, but Heathcliff definitely had some form of influence.
Joseph’s speech I can barely understand, I just skim through his lines and try to understand the context based on whatever is being said by anyone else afterwards.
The whole family is one convoluted mess, Nelly Dean truly is a saint to not run away from the chaos. Overall a good read, just wished I could comprehend the story better.
