I see Discworld mentioned on here often, lots of avid fans highly recommending. I hear there are some 40+ books? Is there any reliant chronology, or should they be read in a specific order (like order in which they were released, or grouped by characters/themes)? Or are they individually independent and you can pick up any one any time?

Suggest me a book to get me started on/into Terry Pratchett.

      We have flowcharts.

Most of the books are self contained enough that you don’t need to know the previous ones to understand the current plot. Things that happen stay happened, so it’s possible to spoil earlier plots by reading later books. The only story with multiple books is The Colour of Magic into The Light Fantastic, which are also usually considered the weakest books. They’re still funny, but Pratchett hadn’t quite figured out plot yet.

I started with Pyramids which is a complete standalone. Mort, Wyrd Sisters, and Guards! Guards! also come to mind as good introductions to Discworld.

So, the flowcharts are definitely the most right way to do it. But I’m a fan of just read whatever book you can get your hands on first. They all stand alone

There is almost no wrong place to start. Though Pratchett did say the first one wasn’t his best.

    4. I always suggest Guards! Guards!, I love the City Watch series the best and that’s the first one

I started with the Rincewind series, then the Witches, and now I’m reading them in publication order. The watch novels are probably my favorite so I wish I would have started with them.
