I want to buy a book for a friend but they have literally hundreds of books. To narrow it down slightly, I know their preference is more academic, 19th/20th century female literature. They enjoy Emily Brontë and Jane Austin and Sylvia Plath, as well as Freud, Tolstoy and Homer. The classics basically.
My issue is, the obvious choices they almost definitely already have. I have no way of knowing their complete collection as there’s just so many, but my thinking is don’t go for anything obvious because it’s likely already owned.
What’s a not so obvious classic, or maybe something “classic-adjacent”, as in theory *about* Jane Austin, or a criticism *of* Tolstoy for example? What are some interesting books along these lines that someone who enjoys the classics will love but isn’t necessarily an obvious choice in and of itself?

Could you maybe try a nice edition of a classic, as more of a keepsake? The Folio Society do some beautiful editions.
