So I’m in interested in the concept of the “warrior poet” in a realistic, historical context.

For instance, I know that several ancient cultures thought in order to be well rounded leader/soldier a man needed to also be versed in history, philosophy, etc. Also, that in ancient Greece men were required to serve as soldiers, which means pretty much every Greek philosopher would count as a “warrior poet.”

I’m interested, however, in lesser known, translated works preferably collected into a single book. The sort of thing that pairs translated poetry written by great generals and soldiers alike alongside a bit of historical context for the poem.

Does anything like this even exist? Google searches only turn up things like warrior poet as a TV trope, or more modern books about “how to be a warrior poet.” I’m not interested in that at all.

    Thanks for an advice.
