I’m in my early thirties, I got a BA in English, and while I feel my college education was worthwhile, and rewarding, I’ve lately been reading lots of US presidential biographies, and stuff about 20th century US politics; while it isn’t as *enriching* as the stuff I learned in college…the stuff I’m learning has felt way more *pertinent* to my everday life.

Like, the geopolitical/domestic landscape makes more sense to me, having read Max Hastings’s recent tome about the Cuban missile crisis, or David Halberstram’s history of 20th century news media.

It’s a different kind of education, and something I’d like to pursue in a focused way.

Not looking for specific book recommendations, I think I’d like to do my own research on what to read, but I’m curious about the five or ten topics you’d say a person ought to be familiar with in order to have a strong sense of…I’m not sure how to put it…Life in the Modern World?
