I’m looking for some ideas for my partner to read to our girls at night. He’s not a big reader and would like to read them “classics” that he finds interesting but as the goal is for them to fall asleep to it I also don’t want it to be something I want them to know what’s going on in it – like Tom Sawyer, the little princess etc. He’s interested in The Three Musketeers or Sherlock Holmes, but I think they might be too young for these. Do you have any suggestions on similar books to these, that could interest dad and daughters that are 11 and 7? Thank you.

Both Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland were written as stories for kids the authors knew. The Hobbit was written for kids too.
These aren’t “classics”, but try these:
{{Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman}}
{{Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke}}
I have very fond memories of my dad reading “The Hobbit” to my siblings and I as kids.
Holes by Louis Sachar! It was the first book my mom read to me at bedtime that I got so invested in I ended up finishing on my own because I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. It’s a great one because it’s really enjoyable for the adults as well as the kids.
