I’m an English teacher working in Vietnam. I’ve got a three classes of great kids – aged 13-16. They’re bright, grown up (in some ways!!) but their English level is very mixed. Some are a little lower than the uk kids I taught, some are much lower!

I need books they can read with relatively simple language but which are ok for older students.

So far we’ve read Cirque Du Freak which they enjoyed, though it was a bit fanciful for the older kids; and we’re reading Chinese Cinderella which was given by the school but they don’t love – it’s a bit slow and some of the language is a bit of a stretch. I’ve also been given Of Mice and Men which is also a little complex given that they’re either Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese.

I was going to try Alone on a Wide Wide Sea as it’s kinda simple but with some grown up ideas, but wondered if there were any others anyone would recommend…

They don’t need to be based in Asia, the school likes them to be culturally broad, they just need to have simple language but grown up themes and characters.

TLDR: I need some great books with simple language but which are mature enough for a 15 year old.

    Thanks everyone!
