I just got finished reading The Book of Goose by Yiyun Li. She pulls you through this whole adventure between two teenaged best friends that write a book together that becomes temporarily famous. For most of it, i felt like it was a decent page turner, and had no problem enjoying the adventure. BUT, in the last, say, 15 pages, omfg. It becomes this whole other thing. You realize the last 330 pages you just read have almost nothing to do with the actually series of events that take place. It suddenly morphs into a whole new perspective on life that causes you to question what is real and what is not, and what that means in terms of finding a place in the world. Even the title and a couple lines from the book nod at the concept of Mother Goose, which are childrens fables, that are designed to be real to children in a certain, more emotional sense, but they are totally made up. The Book of Goose calls you to consider literature and fiction as a whole, and makes your mind turn around what that even means for its own existence. I just cant stop thinking about how freaking meta this book is. Its a book about a book written to question the meaning of books. Im gonna need like a week before I can dive into anything else. I feel so happily mind fucked.
