Hi yall! I’m currently looking for books set in or in a world inspired by Latin America, bonus points if the main character is sapphic! English or spanish is fine!

As for what the tone that I’m looking for is, I’d like to avoid fluffy wholesome type stories, as well as romance book, since I’m not a fan of either. While I do enjoy a well executed romance, I dislike it when the romance is the focus of the story, and would prefer for it to be a side plot if present. Id also prefer minimal immigration elements, since I feel like all the hispanic stuff in english is just about immigration.

Honestly, I’m mostly looking for latino books with queer themes. To give you an idea of the type of book vibes I’m searching for, I just finished She Who Became The Sun and its sequel recently and LOVED IT. I’ve also read The Locked Tomb books by Tamsyn Muir and adored them. I’ve read one Octavia Butler piece (Bloodchild) that I was very drawn torwards. Toni Morrison’s Beloved is probably my favorite book ever. I love Gabriel Garcia Marquez, with Chronicle of an Announced Death being my favorite of his works. Omeros by Derrick Walcott. The Aeneid by Virgil. Terrazo by Abelardo Diaz Alfaro. The short story The Youngest Doll by Rosario Ferré. In other genres, I love anime like Utena, The Apothecary Diaries, Dungeon Meshi. I really enjoy the webtoon Nevermore. Im not necessarily looking for something “adult,” in the sense that its edgy and bloody and game-of-thrones-y with gratuitous violence (tho i did like GoT), and I’m not opposed to YA/teen protagonists. I’m open to a wide variety of tones, really, as long as its got good worldbuilding, character politics, lots of foreshadowing/analysis fodder, you know the kind of stories that make you feel like a dog completing one of those treat puzzles?

I haven’t found many, if any books with Sapphic/queer latino protagonists like that, which is really sad bc I want to see more from my culture. If its by a puertorrican author then its even better. Im just trying to avoid the sea of teeny bopper/boring romance novels that seem to be the vast majority of fictional queer literature. They’re cute, but im just not their demographic!

Oh, and Bonus Points if it involves looots of (well done) politics! I love politics!
