Hello fellow redditors. I am looking for some suggestions reading wise. I will give you a back story to my help to read.
In the past 24 ish months I’ve had 7 major Neurosurgeries, and it has had a life changing effect on my concentration. From being a kid until 2 years back ( I was 36 years old), all I have ever done is read, book after book, series after series, everything you name it. I never watched TV. All I have done is read. Now, obviously, there’s probably quite a bit of trauma to the brain. I’m devastated that I have lost the ability to read, even magazines.
Please could you suggest something to me to help get my passion back. I love mostly thrillers, but I’d try any genre to help me get back into it, so any suggesting would be massively appreciated.
Edit I have a Brain disorder called Idiopathic intercranial hypertension. I have a shunt in my head that drains away the excess spinal fluid. I’ve had 3 shunts in the space of a year.
I hope I’m making sense here. My apologies if it dosent

My go-to book rec for people who want to get (back) into reading is Holes by Louis Sachar, because it appeals to all ages, has really short chapters, and is super engaging!
If sound doesn’t bother you, would audiobooks be an option? I switched from paper to audio a few years ago when I had a health crisis. My concentration was really affected and I did find that being able to lay down on the couch, get comfortable, and CLOSE MY EYES helped me focus on the story.
If you want to try, there is an app called Libby that can connect you to free audiobooks at your library to test it out.
As far as book suggestions, do you like fantasy, detective, scifi?
I hope you find your way back to reading, as I know what a great comfort its been for me.
I recently read A Darker Gold by C.J Ashbrook, and I really loved it (its a thriller)! I’m bad at spoilers so I will give me very rough opinion. But there was some great characters which I found emotionally interested in them and how they developed over the book. The story flowed really well, and kept my attention all the way through!
I hope this book can help you get back into it, the author is definitely not known, but I think really brilliant:))
If you like sci-fi, the Murderbot books are pretty short and the writing isn’t too complex. They’re really funny and entertaining! I’ve read them a lot and I find them weirdly comforting to read when I’m not feeling my best. The audiobooks (narrated by Kevin R. Free) are good too, if you’re open to that.
