I’m reading Call of the Bone Ships right now, and I’m thinking a lot about what I call “Sequel Flavour”, where a second or third book on a series feels quite different from the first. It could be a subtle change in writing style or characterization, or abruptly added plot points, or a general change in tone that makes a book noticeably read differently.
Does anybody else notice this? Which series most strongly invoke this for you?
Please note that I am not talking about a sequel being bad or unnecessary, or being worse compared to its predecessor.
