Now I’ll admit that I was originally looking for a medieval zombie book cause I’ve got trash tastes. And during my search someone recommend between two fires describing it as some of the best horror they’ve ever read.
Now it’s kind of hard to talk about this book without spoiling some things.
So I’m going to try to keep it as simple as I can because a lot of the things that are great about this book are definitely best experienced while reading it. So the basic premise is You take a fallen knight with a special young girl in need of protecting and a sinful priest send them on a journey throw in a plague and evil monsters and you get a familiar setup.
But where between two fires really sets itself apart is just the raw look it takes at humanity and the way it crafts this hopeless fantasy world. And in doing so it really makes the moments where the book shows you glimpses of hope and redemption feel even more powerful. It also manages to instill humor in between some of the darkest moments in the book .
Now the book touches very strongly on a lot of religious themes. So if things like that bother you then you’re probably not going to really connect to this book. But if you can look past that then you’re left with an epic dark fantasy with strong characters. Fantastic writing and probably one of my favorite endings in a book I’ve read this year.
Tldr between two fires is a book that’s both hard to read and impossible to put down. If you like dark fantasy with a good mix of self loathing good humor and a dash of what the fuck just happened then you will like this book.

Glad to hear you liked it. It’s on my TBR because I saw a discussion that basically said that fans of Dark Souls would enjoy it and I’ve been itching for something like that.
