After reading Kafka, Gogol, and Vonnegut, I’m now interested in reading books from the contemporary new(ish) genre of Bizarro. That said, I don’t just want representative examples of the genre but the best of the best writing and entertainment. I don’t want bizarre for the sake of bizarre but bizarro that’s entertaining and/or thought provoking.
(For example, I see Carlton Mellick III seems to be the dean of the genre but not sure where to start in his huge catalog).

Skullcrack City by Jeremy Robert Johnson is a great example, I think, of a bizarre/Bizzaro book that manages to be really entertaining and thought provoking. Fast-paced and fun but definitely not fluffy. I really like his short stories as well, but I think that novel is a great place to start if you’re new to his work.
Speaking of short stories, Richard Thomas has a great collection, Spontaneous Human Combustion, that I recommend seeking out too. Some seriously haunting, gross, surreal stories in there.
