I’m new to Sarah J Maas and I love me a good fantasy based on faerie folklore but I don’t know how I feel about ACOTAR. I am halfway through and I am still working through the constant descriptions and reminders about how dangerous Tamlin is but Feyre consistently and continously puts herself in danger even after several warnings.

I am really annoyed with her lol I am “reading” it on audiobook while I do household chores and I have more than once said out loud to no one in particular, “this girl is so dumb, why is she doing this?”

I don’t know if I’m going to stop reading this book but I am undecided. I suppose since I can’t stop, I’ll make a decision when I finish it.

I wouldn’t mind anyone’s thoughts on this series and Feyre’s character. Does she become less dumb as the series goes along?

    1. I enjoyed those books for what they were, but yea Feyre being dumb was always a complaint. I do think she grows a lot in the second book which made her slightly less annoying.

I personally really liked the first book, loved the second book, thought three was good not great, the fourth is a fluffy feel good novella, and the fifth is just a smut fest with no plot and a main character I didn’t care for (the final book is not Feyre POV).

But even with all their flaws I found the books entertaining and enjoy talking about them (and sometimes bashing them) with my friends!

    2. I was SO over her character in the first book! I only kept on through because I hadn’t anything else to listen to at work lol

She is less annoying in the second book, no spoilers but she sort of comes into her own and stops being such a whiny little child. Also there is less cringy romance tropes – it’s still very much focused on the romance but in a way that bothered me a bit less. I suffered through the first book (until the end, it does get exciting!) and then I rather enjoyed the second book.

I haven’t started the 3rd book yet, and I’m not sure I’m going to. I don’t have a lot of trust in the author to make good choices after the first book lol.

If you want to read something that has a similar vibe/theme BUT with much better characters, I’d highly recommend giving Uprooted by Naomi Novik a look. It’s just a standalone book, but I loved it very much. 🙂 It reminded me a lot of the first ACOTAR book, especially the plot setup, only without any of the things that annoyed me.

(I’m currently tearing through her Temeraire series and it’s also very good (but on a completely different theme from ACOTAR))

She is so annoying. I kept reading because I liked the story but DAMN did she drive me nuts. In a later book she’s not the main character and it gets better.

It pulled me completely out of it when she starts painting her friends’ furniture without permission. I couldn’t after that.

I finished the first one and dropped the series. Just not what I am looking for in a book

    6. My 2 cents, with two books done on Crescent City, midway through book two ACOTAR.

ACOTAR Book1 AND 50% of book2, Fayre’s interactions with most characters is almost unbearable. Her dialogue is mostly petty, generic insults. Sometimes j mass does a great job conveying how Fayre is traumatized and broken, but constantly snapping back at people obviously trying to help her gets tiresome.

I will say book 2 is improving. I like the overall plot and pacing, it makes me want to read more, and my friends saying it gets better makes me want to keep going.

Crescent City was more enjoyable, so far. I think the setting, a kind of modern city mixed with fantasy, is more relatable than the high fantasy of ACOTAR.
