This is a science fiction book that I will spoil from the beginning because I want you to be aware you’re not getting a sci-fi book, you’re getting a protagonist conveyed to be an idiot so well, I actually despised him to some levels. Also don’t read book summaries on Audible, they spoil the ACTUAL twist.

A religious leader, Silk, is losing his church in an auction to a criminal named Blood. Silk is blackmailed into stealing from the rich so he can buy his church back. Silk then accidentally becomes the Chosen One and everyone stands up and claps for him at the end.

Wolf sets up a very purposeful unmoving, slow world in Litany.

My problem with the book is the nothingness that happen towards moving the plot forward. By the end of the book, Silk still doesn’t have money to buy his church back. We think we’re getting a man that will be challenged by his moral and ethical codes but in actuality Silk stumbles from one situation to the next, a real to life hero’s journey where the majority of his time is spent in the mundane with a bit of action very occasionally.

There’s interesting bits about the gods of this world being actual people in the past but the book never explores these ideas much beyond vague exposition near the end. Maybe the story gets better later. It’s hard to recommend Litany when the first 22 hours were a slog to get through.
