My mom has been an avid reader, reading at least 50 books a year. Unfortunately since developing Alzheimer’s she’s been watching more and more TV and reading less and less. She says she has more trouble remembering characters than the plot line, especially when the characters have non-english names. As a result she’s been reading biographies and memoirs more frequently, but I think she needs some fiction for the good of her neuroplasticity.

What are some good novels of the past 20 years or so that have relatively straight forward plot lines and only a few characters. She tends to not enjoy thing overtly fantastical or sci-fi. In the past she’s enjoyed books with strong female protagonists, and as far as subjects go she’s always enjoyed theater, WWII as a backdrop, triumphs of the human spirit.

    Any thoughts?

    Much appreciated!
