It’s hard to describe but I’m looking for novels that have fantasy elements but remain grounded in their setting and not super large scale of a plot. Maybe the characters have powers but don’t live in a fantasy world or the plot is built around characters and their goals rather than the end of the world that they happened to be put in the position to prevent. Closest thing I really have as a comparison is jojos bizarre adventure even if that’s manga rather than a novel. It has plenty of fantasy elements but the plot is usually very small scale and grounded and the setting is mostly the normal world. If the protagonists lose, the world won’t change much, but the important thing is their goals and what they mean to the characters involved. Think about part 8 specifically with how there are no large stakes but it’s all about the characters. It doesn’t have to involve a lot of fighting or anything, just that kind of vibe. Imaginative and interesting but not big in scale and character driven rather than plot driven
