to anyone who has read the underground railroad x colson whitehead— did you see the plot twist coming at the end? if so, what signs indicated to you the plot twist?

i was completely floored by the ending of this book. i felt like i had become so intimate with the characters and their story, and maybe i felt like i knew how it would end. perhaps this is a testament to Whitehead’s intricate and masterful storytelling that won him the Pulitzer. obviously i wasn’t able to foretell, and i was entirely upended by the conclusion.

what could have been the signs pointing me to such an ending? i read back through chapter 13 which seemed to me the most obvious entryway for a hole in the storyline that i could identify. “He reached for his wallet…but thought better of it. ‘Not on me.’” also, the obvious ideological differences between the two characters become glaringly obvious in retrospect, in regard to how each individual may have lived out their respective lives.

what else might i have missed? let me know if there were any indicators that made anyone else realize how the story would (or would not) end.
