I love love looooove this trope and really need something new to sink my teeth into. I love when a character is funny, cocky, and kind of an asshole and they use it to keep people at a distance due to shit that’s happened in their past. They also tend to be VERY good at knowing their shit or being powerful in their own way – so it’s important that they’re cocky for a reason … Otherwise they’re just a rude asshole lol

It’s more becomes less sad/more hopeful but fits the rest, but Crispin from Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay is one of my favorites(other characters in the series might fit as well but aren’t the main character)
