I’m on an extended fantasy spree: I read LoTR, The Hobbit, and all of The Witcher Saga in the past two months or so. Next up on my list is Titus Groan, the first of the Gormenghast series, but I need a palate cleanser. I thought a good, humorous Pratchett would do the trick but I’ve realised that I need a break from the fantasy genre.

So I’m looking for a well written book with good humour that is based in the real world and not too old. Non-ffiction is also OK. I really like Tolkein and Pratchett and my taste in writing tends to be slightly literary, but nothing too stuffy please. Love Salman Rushdie. On the non fiction side I really like Bill Bryson and Oliver Sacks. Prefer authors writing in English from Africa and Asia, particularly commonwealth countries; and uk/ireland.

PS don’t read the Witcher Saga, really disliked the last couple of books for all sorts of reasons. Short stories are great though.

    1. ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ by C.S. Lewis, starting with ‘The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,’ is a series I suggest for its classic good versus evil narrative set in the magical land of Narnia. It’s a series that delights with talking animals, noble quests, and allegorical depth.
