I cannot for the life of me remember much about this book but I DO remember I enjoyed it greatly. Basic googling didn’t net me anything that seemed familiar, but I think this book has got to be an older one so I will be as detailed as I can. (Not much)
Basic synopsis, a young boy becomes apart of an Indian tribe( for reasons I can’t remember exactly but i think some I’ll fate/ something tragic befell his real family?) and grows up with them, eventually marrying the chiefs daughter
The main character is a boy with RED hair that I remember. He grows out his hair in a long braid. I know this is a laughable amount of info to go on but might as well give it a shot. Mr. H if you’re out there, pm me.
Setting must be sometime Louis and Clark era I think.

The light in the forest by Conrad Richter?
Not sure of the book you’re thinking about but *Among the Shoshones* by Elijah Wilson is a similar book. It’s supposed to be a true story. It can be found online for free.
Maybe try r/whatsthatbook as well.
