First, I should say that I listened to the audiobook. I was traveling for work and had a 4 hr flight. I’m a nervous flyer so I usually like to listen to an audiobook on flights and keep my hands busy crocheting or knitting. I forgot to download a book before I got on the plane so I quickly opened up the libby app and filtered by “available now.” I was scrolling for anything that wasn’t complete trash & I come across The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I worked at a bookstore as a teenager when it came out & I remember it was flying off the shelves so I figured it must be a good read. I really didn’t know what it was about, but I assumed I was getting myself into a Ron Rash/Silas House type novel. I clicked download & it finished like 3 minutes before we started rolling down the tarmac. Perfect, I thought.

All I can say is I was very, very wrong. Far from perfect! I’m a new mom & I was gutted by some of the scenes in this book. I know I could have & should have stopped listening, but by the time I realized how dark it was going, I was already hooked! I didn’t finish it, I had to turn it off after they discovered the dead baby. It was just too much. I usually stay away from scary, horror, thriller, etc. Even some mysteries can throw me off! I had a horrible nightmare that night in the hotel. Since then, I’ve literally been thinking about this book all week. I’m so curious as to how it ends but I’m afraid at the same time. I haven’t read any spoilers or googled it yet so my question to my fellow book lovers is this — does it get worse? 🙈

The dead baby on the spit-roast was the most graphic it got, so you might as well finish the book.
