Please can someone suggest me an English language book that would be interesting for a non native speaker. My friend has only read the picture of dorian gray (my favourite) but she had to read it in Russian first and then read it in English.
She would like to read some poetry by English authors but I don’t know what will be suitable as I am not well read. She also likes “realistic stories” so no fantasy unfortunately.

Classic Fiction tends to be on the long side eg Eliot, Bronte, Dickens.
So maybe something more modern such as
James Baldwin: If Beale Street Could Talk
Mohsin Hamid: the Reluctant Fundamentalist
Carson McCullers: the Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
Sylvia Townsend Warner: Lolly Willowes
Poetry – maybe Carol Ann Duff: the World’s Wife
