Lately, I’ve been depressed. Depression has been a thing for me for most of my life, but it’s gotten much worse postpartum. I feel like most books I’ve read on the subject are very self-centred (not that that’s a bad thing), but it’s hard to find books about depression in a world where there really is no hope.

Lack of job prospects, inhumane wars, genocide, suffering 24/7 on our phones in the palm of our hands, cost of living crisis, etc… it’s impossible not to be depressed if you’re not particularly privileged.

Are there any books that truly evoke this hopeless feeling? Despair with humanity and living that even therapy can’t quite fix?

I feel like books such as this would be cathartic. I read No Longer Human and that did capture it a little, but the sexism was a little bit of a turnoff. Albert Camus and Franz Kafka capture it as well, but I’ve unfortunately burned through all of their works.
