I, just like pretty much everyone else, excitedly picked this book up after finishing Penpal and liking it quite alot. And, again like most of its readers, ended up a bit disappointed with a shitton of unanswered questions and foggy confusion. Was the body in the prologue Ben’s? Was Ben violent towards Eric? Did Palmer knew about Beverly and her squatting? What happened in Blackswell? And finally, who the fuck is the golden eyed boy and what does he want. I’ve seen posts on both here and r/horrorlit about these questions. While I have all of these as well (and desperately want answers to them in maybe a sequel?) There is another plot point that gnawed at me and didn’t really see anyone talk about it.
Ben’s body dismorphia.
I assumed he struggled with it ever since Frank gave him a weird look when Ben said “my fat ass”, and was confirmed through out other events that Ben was big in the sense of buff instead of overweight, specifically by Marty.
That plotpoint was never brought up after? What was the point of it if it was just going to be there and then forgotten at the end?
