I am interested in reading philosophy but, after some preliminary reading of Hegel and Kant, I quickly realised that I am not at all smart or well read enough to just jump into the deep end.
What philosophy books would you recommend that a beginner (somebody who reads a lot but is interested in starting on this subject) start with?

A History of Western Philosophy
by Bertrand Russell
is a huge book but very accessible. Granted I’ve never read it cover to cover, but I’ve often used it as a reference book to get an overview of a particular idea or thinker. He covers everything from the pre-Socratic philosophers to the early 20th century thinkers. There are some generalizations and the writing is still a bit dated, but it makes for a good intro.
