So as I said in the title I’m prepping to play in a DnD game where I am playing an immortal. The character is about 6 thousand years old and has watched society collapse twice due to global war.

I’m trying to figure out how to roleplay a character like that acknowledges the fact that they are thousands of years old and have watched empires crumble without falling back on “People aren’t worth meeting because they’ll just die”

so TL;DR I’m looking for a book with an immortal character who does remove themselves from society. preferably Fantasy but any setting works considering how specific the ask is

bonus if they are a shape-shifter but that’s just too specific

    1. Not a book but this is pretty spot on for the anime Frieren, Beyond Journey’s End. It’s so good. The main character is a ~2000yr old elf

    2. Oh Man! This is a sci-fi recommendation but has one of my favorite characters, Esen-alit-Quar. The series, Web Shifters, is by Julie E. Czerneda, a former biologist whose insight into biology influenced her creation of aliens and their plausible alienness. Not just in this series but her other writings as well.

Esen is the youngest of a family of shape shifters, headed by her mother and preceded by several sisters. One of the descriptions of the isolated place her mother lives is the stone steps worn in the center by only her mother’s daily passage. Age and time weigh heavy in the book, with the need to blend in as a driving force. The mother gives her offspring this code and direction and the whole first book is about Esen’s attempts to meet the code.

The first book is Beholder’s Eye, and is followed by Changing Vision and Hidden in Sight.
