I realised the other day that I’ve only read a handful of Scottish books and can’t even name any authors beyond the very obvious ones. So I’m looking to get some recommendations. I’m thinking modern, contemporary, new writers.
I mostly read literary fiction, but I’m open to most things, as long as they’re character driven, and I do like a strong sense of place too. (real places, not keen on fantasy places.) I do like a bit of historical fiction too, but not in the vein of Outlander.
I’d prefer them to be set in Scotland but really as long as the author is Scottish, or even has been based in Scotland a long time, I’m open to anything, Author’s with backgrounds other than just Scottish would be nice too.
Some recent, non Scottish, reads I’ve liked to give an idea of my taste, Boy Swallows Universe, Bandit Queens, Small Things Like These, All That’s Left Unsaid, Devotion, America is not the Heart. My favourite author is probably Tim Winton, and I’d read anything by Steinbeck too. Some classics I love are Emma, Wuthering Heights, Far From the Madding Crowd, and Great Expectations.
A few that I’ve already added to my TBR are Buddha Da, Sunset Song, O Caledonia, and Strong Female Character. I’ve seen Shuggie Bain recommended a lot, but I’m not looking to be emotionally broken at the moment. But anything else is welcome.
Thanks.
