Something set in a medieval/fantasy era, containing adventure, combat, with a somewhat realistic approach. A small cast of characters would be preferred. A good example would be game of thrones(besides the small cast of characters and heavy politics), where there are undead and dragons, but the creatures aren’t as over the top as something like dungeons and dragons. Also, in GoT each character is mortal and can die in any skirmish, making it a very grounded and tense read/watch at times. Magic is fine, and I enjoy movies like lord of the rings, where magic is present but not blown out of proportion.

I recently attempted to read the wheel of time series, which is basically the opposite of what I want. The MC is insanely overpowered and magic is a bit excessive for my taste.

    Thanks!

    1. The Faithful And The Fallen series by John Gwynne. Very good as far as generic fantasy goes

    2. Either the Shadowmarch series or the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series by Tad Williams

The Fortress series by C. J. Cherryh focuses in incredible detail on the realistic details and logistics of the fantasy world.
