I’m looking for an author who has a set of works my husband and I can read through together. We recently did this with Emily St John Mandel’s books, and now we’d like to find an author who meets this criteria:
• Books range ~200-400 pages (not too long because we’ll read them on road trips); because of road trips, stories for short attention spans are a plus
• Open to all genres from thrillers to fantasy. He usually reads comic books and sci-fi. I usually read fantasy, romance, and literary, historical, and/or general fiction.
• Safe to read out loud around kids (I.e., no explicit sex and violence)
• Author has at least 5 books
Open to all ideas! Thank you so much.

Seanan McGuire and her pen names (Mira Grant and A Deborah Baker) might be a good bet for you. Some of her series are skewed more adult than others, but by and large her books feel pretty PG-13 to me. I’d suggest looking into The Ghost Roads trilogy, the Wayward Children series, or the InCryptid series.
Discworld’s Tiffany Aching subseries by Terry Pratchett
Pretty much anything by T Kingfisher may fit (though the Paladin series first popped in my head). Nine Goblins is also really great.
The Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold
His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman
Sabriel (and the following books) by Garth Nix
the Binti series by Nnedi Okorafor
My husband and I read the whole Discworld series to one another – starting with Mort (Death’s apprentice). We laughed and laughed, when we weren’t discussing something he’d written. The City Watch stories are particular favorites (those start with “Guards, Guards). It took us a bit to warm up to his first Discworld books, but the characters grew on us.
Have fun, no matter what you choose!
