Something colorful. Immersive. Contemporary. Creepy? WEIRD! I’m not at all afraid of difficult prose, but I also love a fast-paced beach read.
BTW, I’ve read everything by Jeff Vandermeer and Blake Crouch. Jeff is one of the greats. Crouch writes very good beach books.

Library at Mt Char by Hawkins. Hyperion by Simmons. Broken Earth Trilogy by Jemisin.
Mo Hayder’s The Devil of Nanking might fill the bill and it has an Asian setting. Seriously disturbing but enthralling.
The Necromancer’s House by Christopher Buehlman, My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix, The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones
