I’d prefer them to actually be law-focused, as opposed to something like The Firm.
Here are the three authors I’ve read that wouldn’t (necessarily) fit into what I’m looking for:
John Grisham: terrible writer. Terrible plots. Terrible opinions.
Scout Turow: I’ve read One L and The Laws of Our Fathers and enjoyed both of them. I don’t necessarily mind being suggested books by authors who remind you of Turow, but they’re not very gritty (I wish I had a better term). I see him as kind of a James Ellroy of legal fiction, and I’d prefer something a little more like the Elmore Leonard.
Paul Levine: this is very close to what I’m looking for when it comes to humorous. Very similar to Harlan Coben’s Myron Bolitar series. The problem is that neither Levine or Coben are really all that great writers.
Some authors I like whose style I would be looking for….
Dark/gritty: Charlie Huston, Victor Gischler, Don Winslow (less so his newer novels), Daniel Woodrell, older Dennis Lehane
Humorous: Carl Hiaasen, Tim Dorsey, Kinky Friedman, Christopher Moore, Dave Barry
If anybody has seen seasons 2 and on of the Good Fight…that kind of smart ass whimsy is perfect.
Some other authors I love:
Alex Garland, Steven Hall, Tom Perrotta, Lionel Shriver, Richard Powers, Chuck Klosterman
I don’t necessarily care so much about the plot, but if you could tell what/whose style your recommendation is similar to, I would appreciate it. My favorite is probably considered literary genre fiction.
Edit: shockingly, perhaps the best legal fiction I’ve ever read was My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult
