Hi all, I was looking at my bookshelf and found that a lot of the books, whilst excellent, there was a lot of 20th century literature and a lot of white male authors. I therefore want to broaden my horizons and the experiences I read about, with a particular focus on more modern novels by underrepresented authors but I simply don’t know where to start!

I’ve just finished Drive your plow over the bones of the dead by Olga Tokarczuk which I really enjoyed, I loved how she incorporated philosophical musings with a clear position on animal rights into a compelling crime noir and I’d quite like suggestions which use a conventional framework to discuss a variety of things, whether that be a historical moment in time or philosophy. It also doesn’t necessarily have to be fiction, I quite like things like Alexeivich and her oral histories.

My taste is a little all over the place, about 5 years ago I really got into postmodernism and read a lot of Eco and Calvino which I really enjoyed. I also really like Sci-Fi, but I’m trying to avoid it a little and branch out into other genres. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Georgi Gospodinov, a Bulgarian postmodernist writer, won the International Booker in 2023 with his novel Time Shelter. I have not read Time Shelter yet, but recommend Physics of Sorrow by him. It was the book that got me interested in him. Physics of Sorrow was also the first book that got him international attention in Europe. His translator Angela Rodel has translated a few Bulgarian novels into English so I suggest looking into her if you’re interested.
