I started reading last year and I’ve been trying out different genres. My friend and I do read togethers every other book we read and this time around we’re looking for a fantasy book, preferably one that is more gritty (perhaps adult is a better word?,) use of neat/interesting/flashy magic (we gush over Sypha’s fight scenes in the animated Castlevania series.) I generally stick to books that are a stand-alone story and around 400 pages because I get a little overwhelmed and feel like I can’t manage super long books.
The books I read last year with brief thoughts are as follows
Mistborn Book 1 – Super cool usage of metal magic, easy to read, fun cast of characters with different personalities, ending felt really rushed and kind of boring, enjoyed the small amount of politics. Sanderson’s writing was also detailed enough and still easy to follow.
The House in the Cerulean Sea – Loved the character development/cast and story surrounding chosen/found family and change in lifestyle. Very emotional book for me which was nice
Under The Whispering Door – Extremely slow start, didn’t care for the main character’s unlikable attitude, struggled to get into it
Wolfsong – Hard to care about most of the characters, repeated phrases got slightly annoying, enjoyed seeing the love blossom between main characters
The Martian – Really enjoyed main characters humor and problem solving, loved the edge of seat moments, sciency parts were a little hard to follow
Project Hail Mary – Really enjoyed the cast of characters, side character was bad ass no-nonsense no time for emotion problem solver, best friend dynamic was super cool especially how they complimented eachothers strengths and weaknesses, was really neat learning about main characters past as he slowly remembered, sciency parts were harder to understand
I look forward to hearing any recommendations!
