There are lots of different reasons why I like this movie so much. I enjoy coming of age stories a lot and ones that have themes of nostalgia/being a kid. Another aspect of the movie I like is the long journey the characters take. By the end, it feels like you were with them the whole way and just returned from a lengthy adventure. The movie just felt life-changing for me in a way I can’t describe. The “bittersweet” ending where Gordie comes to terms with his past and lets it go has always been one of my favorite scenes in any movie.

I did read Catcher in the Rye for school a few years back so I’ll probably revisit that sometime. I also know the movie is based on the Steven King short story The Body but I’m looking for a novel. The recommendations don’t have to be coming of age, but something that has a similar vibe or theme (nostalgia/reflecting on the past) to the movie would be good.

    1. Summer of Night by Dan Simmons.

      Boy’s Life by Robert McCammon.

Both are more supernatural than The Body, but both capture that kids on bikes in the ’50s/’60s doin’ stuff vibe.
