    Hey guys,

So last year, after a decade long hiatus on reading for personal enjoyment, I decided to start listening to audiobooks. Since then, I’ve been reading a lot of the books that piled up on my “to-read eventually” list, then dove into a bunch of nonfiction feminist and history books, then went a little crazy with fantasy romance novels.

Now, I want to branch out a bit and give a couple other genres a try, but I’m not sure where to start. I like pretty much every kind of movie and TV show, so Im open to trying anything when it comes to books— the only things I don’t want recommendations for are nonfiction informative books (I already have a million on my list), fantasy romance (I would like to hear recommendations for fantasy that’s not romance focused though. Romance subplots are fine, just nothing that’s on the most recommended books from r/fantasyromance), or futuristic/space themed books (I’m not a huge fan of reading about this sort of thing, but if you have a book that you think could change my mind, I’m all for it!).

So with that said, what are your favorite [insert genre here] books? Ones that will really suck someone in right away and make you never want to put them down.

Here are the things I’m looking for regardless of genre:

    – Must be Written by a woman (I’m also ok with nonbinary and trans men)

    – Woman main character— enby and trans men are ok too, and I’m ok with a cis male main character IF the author is obviously a feminist (example: T. Kingfisher).

    – Bonus points if the main character is over 25 and not conventionally attractive.

    – Must have an audiobook (bonus points if it’s free on audible).

Here are some of the books I’ve read and loved recently to get an idea of what I like:

    – The Scholomance series by Naomi Novik

    – Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas

    – Swordheart by T Kingfisher: my favorite “cosy” book I’ve read since I got back into reading. But I already have all of T Kingfishers books on my list, so please don’t recommend more of her lol.

    – Yellowface by R F Kuang

    – I’m glad my mom died: specifically, I loved Jennette’s writing style

    – Hunger games

    – Harry Potter

    – A Court Of Thorns and Roses: pretty cheesy, but I still enjoyed it

    – Crescent City

    Books I did not like:

    – Game of Thrones: I LOVED the show, but the books made me want to gag. Specifically, the way women are written and GRRMs writing style. There was one point where he said “it was all that [insert character here] could do….” So many times in one short burst that I rage quit the book.

    – Fourth Wing: literally the most predictable book I’ve ever read, and the prose is absolute shit. But it was fun, I’ll give it that.

    Thanks guys!

Here’s a fairly long list for you! I included a number of middle grade books in the list, but rest assured that the ones I included are genuinely very worth reading! (and often shorter than adult books)

      – [Garden Spells](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/4fa68aad-d858-418e-81aa-fc0915de89b8) by Sarah Addison Allen

      – [Sandry’s Book](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/517c2b83-2a68-4620-8f0d-2e0faf2990fd) by Tamora Pierce (though I guess this one really has 4 povs, three girls and one boy)

If you liked Yellowface, I really enjoyed The Poppy War by RF Kuang. Younger MC but she’s not conventionally attractive at all.

Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano is a beautifully written story about women (it’s basically a modern Little Women). One POV is a man but the story is still very much centered on the women.

If you like Harry Potter and are open to more middle grade/children’s books – Inkheart by Cornelia Funke is fantastic.

Memoirs by women I’ve really loved:

      – Being Lolita by Alisson Wood

      – Know My Name by Chanel Miller

I recommend the Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold. It’s a sci fi space opera that has a lot of entries. Start with Shards of Honor, which has been “included in your membership” on Audible in the past. Bujold has won multiple Hugo Awards, including for this series.

I’ve got the perfect one , look no further: Historical fiction- “Carnegie’s Maid” by Marie Benedict

Try the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. The first four books are free on the Audible Plus Catalog. The main character is a gender less security bot/android(?), although the narrator is male so be warned in case there’s any confusion there. It’s an amazing series that I literally can’t stop thinking about or recommending to people.

      Books I also enjoyed:

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

      Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

Im into mystery/crime which I don’t know if you are open to, but I love Tana French, Megan Abbott, and Gillian Flynn.
