Slightly more modern and a bit of a niche sailing type, but Around the World Submerged by Edward L. Beach is a great picture into crews life sailing on a nuclear submarine.

The foremost book in my experience is,” White Jacket” by Melville. Life on the other side of the globe in a line, 500 man, man o war, flagship frigate in the 1840s. And, it’s written to be informative and not so much an epic story.

The Aubrey and Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian has 20 novels set during the Napoleonic Wars. Super-detailed stories about life on the sea.
[Two Years Before the Mast](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/335397.Two_Years_Before_the_Mast) is a classic.
