I’m looking for a book that discusses society’s relationship with clothing (or lack thereof), specifically with reference to propriety, modesty, coverage, etc. Like in which cultures were different standards of modesty practiced, and why is is culturally appropriate to cover up the way we do today? When, where, and to what extent has nudity been tolerated, commonplace, or celebrated, and what did it mean to the peoples of those groups?
I’m having a hard time finding information that covers this on a broad spectrum. It seems a lot easier to find anecdotal mentions for specific cultures, but nothing I can find addresses the subject in a broad historical sense. Any book recommendations would be appreciated!
