    I want to be broken and sent into tears, so stories about post war where people lost everything should do the trick. I also have a high respect for the army, and want to understand the trauma people who fought struggled with after the at, with accepting death of comrades and friends. Any post war books that have brought you to tears, recommend.

      I’m only about halfway through, but I’m really enjoying Caught In the Revolution by Helen Rappaport. It’s the stories of foreign visitors (journalists, diplomats, tourists, etc) who were stuck in Petrograd when the Russian revolution began. I suppose that’s more “during” than “post,” but it’s really good. 

    2. The Road Back by Erich Maria Remarque—haven’t read it yet but I adored and sobbed with AQOTWF and from what I’ve heard of it it fits the bill of what you’re asking for
