It’s probably the same reason people like thrill rides. It’s the illusion of danger that gets the adrenaline and endorphins going. I don’t like the rides or haunted houses, but a good scary book or movie is a way to get that while still feeling safe.

I enjoy the suspense and thrill of horror novels. Although, I will say that I like “lighter” horror novels and am not really into super gory horror. It can feel a bit like an adrenaline rush like on a roller coaster. Or horror can explore ideas that you find fun or interesting. If you’re looking for an accessible horror author, Grady Hendrix if often suggested. I quite liked his novel Horrorstor which is essentially about a haunted Ikea.

*The Shining* by Stephen King. A spectacularly claustrophobic novel. I enjoy the Kubrick feature film, but the novel…

While I’m a big Stephen King fan, I would recommend reading a book where you’ve seen the movie and you liked it. It, Salem’s Lot, Misery is awesome.
