Hi, I just wanted to ask something (maybe spoilers for The Giver by Lois Lowry)…
Is there anyone who has read The Giver by Lois Lowry? I hope so. I´ve read the book and loved it, and now I get to read the Messenger. But I didn´t read Gathering Blue, which is the second book of the trilogy (The Giver is first and Messenger is third), and I don´t have the book (only the Messenger). Can I read the Messenger before reading Gathering Blue? I want to have little to no spoilers, rather no spoilers. I know that Messenger isn´t a direct continuation for The Giver, but I don´t know about Gathering Blue. And since >!Jonas is in the Messenger!<, I believe that the series does have some continuity, but I´m really unsure. I want to avoid all spoilers I can. So, can I read it then?

Lois Lowry did an AMA here in /r/books [you might want to check it out](http://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/3ab3fz/hi_reddit_i_am_lois_lowry_author_of_the_giver_ama/?) 🙂 . [Here’s a full list of our upcoming AMAs](http://www.reddit.com/r/books/wiki/amafullschedule)

IIRC Gathering Blue was about a totally different person that only vaguely intersected with Jonas’ story? But it’s been ages since I read those. You can probably just wikipedia Gathering Blue.
My understanding, not having read it is, is that >!Jonas just makes a cameo in the Messenger!<
I recently revisited this quartet.
Messenger brings characters from The Giver and Gathering Blue together. You meet the protagonist from Messenger as an important side character in Gathering Blue. Similar to in The Giver, Gathering Blue is a story of someone coming of age in a troubled society (called “Village”), though the society is very different than “Community” from The Giver.
If you eventually want to read the whole series, I’d suggest NOT reading Messenger before Gathering Blue. You won’t get to appreciate the protagonist’s arc if you skip it.
_(Edit: I originally referred to it as a trilogy in my reply)_
