This is my fault for reading two dystopian/post-apocalyptic novels in a row (I read and enjoyed Station Eleven First), but I’m about halfway through Parable of the Sower and struggling mightily. It might be because instead of the tragic thing happening all at once, we get first her brother brutally being murdered, then her father going missing, then her whole community being burned to the ground and she escapes with two neighbors and starts having to kill people and scavenge to survive. It just feels like every chapter has a new disturbing tragedy.
Does it get less depressing and disturbing over time? Worth pushing through? I really love Butler’s writing and sense of voice. No spoilers please.
