Hey! This is my first time joining. I just devoured In Memoriam by Alice Winn last week and I am still thinking about it. I was in a pretty bad reading slump for a while and somehow came across this book and I was wholly impressed by everything; cannot believe this was Alice’s debut – really reminded me why I love reading.
I feel like most modern books these days focus on tropes and it feels redundant or in your nose, but this novel was fresh despite it being set in WWI. I’ve been trying to find a book similar to this – realistic character driven story with haunting prose. I loved the dialogue, humor, queerness of it all. It felt so fragile, carnal, and devastating. It’s been a long time since a book has moved me; I can go on talking about it, ha. I felt like it put me in a spell and couldn’t stop reading it.

Has anyone read a book similar? In regards to tone, prose, character driven story?

Would love to find other books like In Memoriam to dive into.

    (if it’s queer that’s also a plus!)

    1. I just finished Let The Dead Bury the Dead and it had reminded me of In Memoriam in its period setting with modern sensibilities. It’s set in Russia in 1812 though, so if you’re looking for more WWI this isn’t it.
