I am looking for novels that have narrators who always pretend to be someone else because they don’t like themselves. Because of their insecurities. They want to be loved, but they think that no one would love them just being themselves.
The closest that I can think of now is The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, but it is quite different. The narrator (Mr. Stevens) pretends and hides his feelings because he thinks it is right to do (at least that’s my interpretation), not because he can be more loved that way. In that sense, I want narrators who want to be loved like friends or loved ones love.
I am generally looking for novels that explore feelings, emotions, psychology, minds of those narrators. It would also be a lot of fun if, like The Remains of the Day, narrators are unreliable in a way that they pretend to us, the readers. But any suggestions would be appreciated!
