My youngling is looking for books to suggest for her middle school book club (grades 5-8). The last few books they’ve done have featured white female protagonists, so she’s looking for book suggestions with protagonists that don’t fit that description. Any ideas? Thanks!

A few I’ve loved that I think would go over well:
– [Amari and the Night Brothers](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/bc900683-2d84-47f8-aa09-6a494a57bb18) by B.B. Alston
– [Sal and Gabi Break the Universe](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/097337c3-ebf2-429a-80de-f345099b142c) by Carlos Hernandez
– [Serwa Boateng’s Guide to Vampire Hunting](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/0df432b0-d134-42f9-b065-c3f1a8679c2f) by Roseanne A. Brown
The Zoe Washington series by Janae Marks, Black Brother, Black Brother by Jewell Parker Rhodes, the Track series by Jason Reynolds, Kelly Yang’s middle grade books (especially the Front Desk series), Jacqueline Woodson’s middle grade (Brown Girl Dreaming, Harbor Me, etc.)
Haroun and the Sea of Stories
Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor is a wonderful story which focuses on the struggles of a Black American family growing up in the Jim Crow south. I’ve read all the books in this series and they’re all really great.
I’ll add to all the excellent suggestions: One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia, Merci Suarez Changes Gears by Meg Medina, The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste, When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller
