Looking for fantasy or sci-fi books with an extremely intelligent, resourceful, wry protagonist who’s playing some bigger game, and is often a few steps ahead of everyone else

I love sci-fi and fantasy where the protagonist is extremely intelligent, resourceful, and playing some greater game (be that politics, warfare, espionage, or other subterfuge). Wry attitude or dark humor is a plus. This person is especially skilled somehow and often outmaneuvers people around him/herself.
