I remember reading spooky books as a teen, but struggle to find books that excite me the same way. I am not against reading YA books as an adult, so really any recommendations are appreciated, but i mostly want more grown up stories. I like murder/crime, mystery and fantasy all kinda mixed in.
Books i enjoyed at 12-16 age:
Cirque du freak series – Darren O’Shaughnessy
The book of dead days (and other Marcus Sedgwick books)
Daughter of smoke and bone series – Laini Taylor
Everlost – Neal Shusterman
Green Angle – Alice Hoffman
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
I read every Neil Gaimen book in my 20s and enjoyed them.

– Piranesi by Susanna Clarke (fantasy… a little bit sci-fi too)
– The Yiddish Policemen’s Union by Michael Chabon (crime/detective)
– Inherent Vice by Thomas Pynchon (crime/detective)… although be aware that Pynchon’s writing style is pretty polarizing so there’s a nontrivial chance that you’ll hate it.
Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Canas
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno Garcia
Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney
The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean
Most any of T Kingfisher’s books!
