A fantasy series or standalone WITHOUT the found family trope?
I don’t mind if the MC has a partner or even a crew that they meet along the way, but I’m tired of the whole “I was nothing until these people showed me the power of friendship!” trope. Any suggestions?
Sevenwaters trilogy by Juliet Marillier, Uprooted and Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, the Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden, and the Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner

First Law series by Joe Abercrombie
These people are around each other because they have to be but there’s not much friendship/family going on. Very fun dialog and a large world with a deep history, too.

A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by Ursula Vernon. The main character was pretty annoyed with everyone in charge by the end of it.
