Been stuck in a rut, finding it hard to get novels I enjoy. Been fiddling with Muriel Spark, but I don’t click with her style.

Maybe I should aim at more contemporary writers, of 2000s?
Or maybe there are some novels of days gone that I’d enjoy?

i have some ideas: iris murdoch, fay weldon, kingsley amis, margaret drabble.

some info about the tastes of the source (me):

for me lessing stood out for her ability to nail ‘trivial’ social behaviours. she just aced all those subtextual things that set your radar buzzing but you can’t put your finger on why.

none of the above people are exactly like her. they’re mostly more humanist and individual, but still bring unique observational skills – just on different levels and in different voices.

i found most of spark too abstract and dry for my taste. i did like the mandelbaum gate very much but that one had more of a regular plot.
