NPR recommended “Witch King” by Martha Wells, and NPR has never given me a bad recommendation before. I loved the Murderbot diaries, so how could I not love this?
Oh dear, this book was boring. The flashbacks were the outline of a book, and the only part of the story with any character or plot development. Overreliance on flashbacks is a sign of weak writing. The story in the present was painfully dull. The main characters’ primary trait was “somewhat badass with a painful past.”
Has anyone else read this? Should I keep going? Did you like it? I’m trying to pin down what I disliked so much.

I enjoyed it well enough, particularly how everything tied together at the end. But it’s not my favorite kind of story structure, the past-present alternating. You know it’s fine to set a book aside. You may be ready for it in five years or twenty, it’ll still be there.
